ATLANTIC WHITE CEDAR SWAMP & MARCONI POINT
On Route 6, just past Wellfleet is the left turn to the Marconi site. At the end of the road you come to the point from where Marconi made his first historic trans-Atlantic radio broadcast to King George VI of England. Nothing remains of the transmission tower except for a few footings.
The other sight well worth exploring is the Atlantic White Cedar Swamp. Duckboards guide you through the ancient swampland and between the few remaining cedars that once covered the Cape.
PROVINCELANDS, THE NATIONAL SEASHORE AND DUNES
The National Seashore Park, the Province Lands, the dunes and the dune shacks are not to be missed. The famous dune shacks have a special place in Provincetown history. After being abandoned for many decades, they became home to many writers and artists in the 1940's and 50's. Tennessee Williams was living in a shack as he was putting the finishing touches to "A Streetcar Named Desire". Legend has it that Marlon Brando had to hitchhike to Provincetown and trek out to the shack to audition for the role.
Art's Dune Tours (508) 487 1950/1050 www.artsdunetours.com is a great way to see the dunes and the shacks in comfort. Their 4 wheel drive tours are great fun and the drivers are colorful, informative and entertaining. The sunset tour is particularly memorable.
